Jaw Pain, Headaches & Stress: The Triangle Most People Miss

Jaw Pain, Headaches & Stress: The Triangle Most People Miss

Do you:

  • Wake with a tight jaw?
  • Notice clicking or locking?
  • Clench when stressed?
  • Get headaches around your temples?
  • Feel tight through your face and neck?

You may have TMJ dysfunction.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. It’s small, complex, and deeply influenced by both mechanics and emotion.

Why Jaw Pain and Headaches Travel Together

The jaw shares nerve pathways with:

  • The temples
  • The ears
  • The sinuses
  • The neck
  • The base of the skull

So jaw overload often presents as:

  • Temple headaches
  • “Sinus” pressure without infection
  • Ear fullness
  • Neck stiffness
  • One-sided head pain

Many people treat the head — but never assess the jaw.

The Stress Component

Clenching is often unconscious.

During periods of stress, uncertainty, or emotional strain, the jaw becomes a holding pattern.

It’s one of the body’s “brace points”.

The more you brace:
→ The more muscle tension builds
→ The more joint irritation occurs
→ The more the nervous system sensitises

It becomes a cycle.

What Helps?

TMJ treatment is gentle and specific. It may include:

  • Joint mobility work
  • Muscle release techniques
  • Bite awareness training
  • Relaxation of overactive jaw muscles
  • Tongue posture correction
  • Neck retraining
  • Nervous system down-regulation

And importantly — understanding what your body is holding onto.

Jaw pain is rarely “just the jaw”.

When treated properly, many patients notice:

  • Fewer headaches
  • Less facial tension
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced neck pain
  • Better energy

If you’re constantly clenching and didn’t even realise it — that’s something we can change.
